How to make Net Zero happen in Australia!

Here are the key findings and recommendations from the Mobilisation report by Net Zero Australia, about how Australia can achieve its net zero emissions goals and transition to a sustainable future.

What’s remarkable, is that we can get there by 2050 using the existing technology!

But first, a little background. Who is Net Zero Australia? What do they do? Why is what they do important?

Who is Net Zero Australia?

Launched in 2021, the Net Zero Australia study aims to provide rigorous and independent analysis of how Australia can achieve net zero emissions for both our domestic and export economies.

Net Zero Australia is collaboration between the University of Melbourne University, the University of Queensland, Princeton University and Nous Group who have applied Princeton University’s approach in the ground-breaking Net Zero America Study to Australia

What did they do?

Final modelling results were made public for the first time on Wednesday 19 April 2023, and include a detailed breakdown of possible scenarios and sensitivities, sector by sector, and comprehensive mapping of the transition across the country. The study aimed to:

  • model pathways to decarbonise the energy, industry and transport sectors

  • identify and analyse socio-economic benefits of decarbonisation, including pollution reduction and job creation

  • identify investment, infrastructure and innovation priorities that create real options for rapid decarbonisation.

You can find details of the modelling output here , including

    • Summaries of the final results, which summarise to varying levels of depth the overall final modelling results.

    • Methods, Assumptions, Scenarios & Sensitivities (MASS) report, which provides a complete summary of Net Zero Australia input assumptions and methods.

    • Datasheets, maps and GIS data, which support the figures maps and findings made across the reports

    • Downscaling reports, which provide granular results on employment, capital deployment, renewable and non-renewable resources, many different types of asset builds, bioenergy and forestry.

There are seventeen downscaling reports are available.

Here’s an overview of the scope of the research work:

Why is what they do important?

The decarbonisation imperative is prompting commitments to reach net zero emissions by 2050 from governments and businesses around the world.

However governments and corporations have been slow to move on anything other than commitments on paper and there’s obviously a growing need for a comprehensive Australian plan with greater attention to detail and rigour to inform policy and business planning.

The Net Zero Australia study demonstrates how Australia’s governments, businesses, non-profit organisations and communities can plan and move on getting to net zero emissions by 2050.

Key points

  • The report provides a roadmap for accelerating Australia’s path to net zero emissions.

  • It explores strategies for accelerating the adoption of net-zero options.

  • The report defines Australia’s role in global decarbonisation.

  • It proposes fair cost-sharing approaches and emphasizes the need to protect biodiversity.

  • Collaboration is highlighted as a key factor in achieving a sustainable future.
