It’s a bird…it’s a plane. It’s an EV charger!

Okay, it might not be that high in the sky, but Seattle (USA) is piloting a new style of electric vehicle charger that attaches to wood poles high above street level.

How it works: You tap your mobile phone, and down comes an EV charger with cord, and you connect your EV to the charging station.

The problem it’s solving: Accessibility to charge batteries for someone who wants an EV and doesn't have a garage to install their own charging station is “ one of the intractable riddles of the budding EV age."

The system:

  • uses the same EV charging technology as curbside systems, but eliminates the need for dedicated garage space;

  • charger is on a curb, in an industrial part of the city where anyone could park;

  • is aimed at being convenient for a different kind of person, someone who wants an electric vehicle but doesn’t have a garage.

Americans need to drive EVs by the millions if the USA is to drive down its carbon emissions and preserve the existing climate, however about 37% of all households don't have a garage, and don't have convenient access to a charging station.

30 chargers will be installed throughout Seattle's disadvantaged neighbourhoods as part of a new pilot program. As part of the program, the municipal utility is collaborating with other city departments, such as the transportation department, which is responsible for curbs.
